If it was built after 1972, the HIN should be on a plate on the starboard side of the transom... if built before then, it's a crap shoot.
Post 1972 there is a second one hidden someplace else on the boat, but that location isn't standardized at all...so could be in a locker or behind a fixture or under a hatch.
