Wishbone Boom

Just curious to what folks have to say about the wishbone booms on boats like the Nonsuch. What are the advantages and disadvantages? I sailed wind boards for years and never thought about putting one on a larger boat. I see advantages in sail shape, size, and possibly reefing. I have never taken a close look at such a boat but am curious what others think about wishbone booms.

I sail against a few Nonsuch boats here (yes some people do race them

)

They go down wind really GOOD they go upwind really BAD at least 15 degrees less pointing ability then a boat with a jib

The ultimate in simplicity, like sailing a great big Sabot or Optimist. The rig is self-vanging, another advantage.

However you also have the performance deficits mentioned above, and the fact that all your "eggs are in one basket" with respect to your sailplan.

With the Nonsuch boats, that rig, in conjunction with the beamy voluminous design makes for a roomy comfortable boat for its length.

As in all things nautical there are trade-offs.

Interesting stuff. Your point about all eggs in one basket seems like an important trade off if you are a cruiser but no big deal if you are just weekend sailing on the bay. They might be a great boat if you are a charter captain. They have room on deck and simplicity so you can watch the safety of your clients and not worry about trimming all the sails etc. I have no desire to get one but have been curious about some of the advantages and disadvantages. Thanks for the great info.

Boat is stripped down - everything is empty. Water is flat.
It loses its performance loaded and in lampy seas, but still it is capable boat.

I have "convenient" rigs - with sailtrack and boom at the "bottom", however I believe that one ply sail with sailtrack and wishbone boom is feasible option.

Wishbone boom makes a sense on catboats since sails are big and wide and boom occasionally hits water.
