So I've been doing some mock-up on the dish holder/drain rack part of the galley.

The plan so far is to have the plates and bowels stowed in a rack high in the cabinet and the mugs and glasses stowed in a "tray" below.

Both will be accessible while stowed.
The dish rack will hinge/ rotate down and rest just above the counter out side the cabinet near the sink....at the same time the mug tray will rise up, tilt forward and slid over the edge of the backsplash so when draining the water will drip to the counter top..

Its probably over engineered, but I've had idle hands and the boat is far away.

Keep in mind these pictures are mock-up only...the dish rack will be from
mostly plastic.

The space dog pictures are a section/profile (side view)…the “head” is the dish rack and the rectangular “body” is for the mugs/glasses.

The plywood back represents the cabinet.

Ohhh THAT Rube Goldberg....Yes, I'm sure I must be related....in all fairness, it looks more complicated than it is....but its definitely more complicated then a shelf with fiddles.
Its a sickness, and I just cant help myself!

While it does look a bit complicated, it also looks like it would serve the purpose quite elegantly... much like the davits and steering pedestal aboard your boat, which I've previously admired.

Its not complicated....but lots of pieces.
These are some better pics of the first go at the dish rack mock-up….(since changed)

I made a mock up of the two cabinets and “soffit” part of the galley to help me sort out the dish rack and cabinet doors.

I ended up with doors .like the old style bread box lid.
They work real well with the dish rack...I can still get the biggest plate out when the rack and door are up, and they dont need the counter cleared to operate.

One up side with this design is it lets me have the top of the doors follow the upward slope/line of the hand hold trim and soffit. There is almost 4cm difference it the height of the far right door end and far left.

The mechanical part of the dish rack and cup holder is finished except for some sanding and varnish.

I made most of the arms and linkage by laminating five 2mm pieces of teak together.

For the hinge parts I drilled out and epoxied sealed bearings in place.
They are pressed in and have a shoulder on one side…then on the other piece I had a local machine shop turn me some round “nuts” with a shoulder and these I epoxied in.

The bolt passes through the bearing side then threads into the nut until the inner face of the bearing is tight against the end of the “nut” that protrudes 2mm past the face of the arm…..

Works real smooth.

The partitions for holding the plates and bowels are still mocked up in MDF and the spacers are PVC, I haven’t yet found the materials to make the final one.

The cup holder will have a removable plastic tray with what ever sides I need to keep the pieces in place….for now I laid in a 3mm panel to see how it passes over the backsplash.

This was the gadgetry part….when you pull the dish rack down the cup holder rises up higher than the back splash and goes from being level to tilting to the front….then you rotate the dish rack inward and the cup rack moves horizontally until the lower front of the tray has moved beyond the face of the back splash…..so and wet cups will drain on to its tray and then drip on to the counter.

The first pic with my finger in it shows the lip (will eventually be from Plastic) as it has extended over the mock up back splash.

The other pic with my finger shows the relationship between the end of the open door and the shape of the underside of the soffit.
