Imagine a giant's bow and arrow. Now inagine your mast as the arrow. Firing straight down. There's a lot of force there. I don't believe you could have a very effective post by making it removeable when not sailing.

Yes aluminum is not as strong as steel. But you could probably build a beam out of aluminum, which is about a third the weight of steel, and have it come out lighter by about 1/3.
