just to clarify for everyone all boats have and have always had chines. what you are referring to is a hard chine and they have been around for a long time a chine is the point at which the bottom and sides of any vessel meet traditional rounded hull shapes have soft chines.

Quite so newhaul...insert "hard" where obviously appropriate.

"They use chines not because a rating or rules make them more convenient on the paper calculations, but because the hulls work better on the water with chines."

There will come a day when the current "chiseled" designs will be deemed obsolete...

You can plan on it Paulo

No doubt about that

But for now, (hard) chines are just arriving to the cruising boats, after having proved its efficiency on racing boats.

Again, for the kinds of hulls that are in fashion today, that may be so.

But that fashion WILL change.

Personally, I find the boats of today downright ugly.

And, I just grow a bit weary of the notion that once something new comes along, all the older stuff is "bad".

(Meanwhile, I'm off to my retro floating toy...that is equipped with a CQR)
