A centerboard consists of a variety of moving parts subject to wear and corrosion, located in a totally inaccessible place under a hostile environment. What could possibly go wrong with that?!
There probably aren't any better alternatives to getting a shoal draft boat though, unless you start looking at multihulls. I keep reading that using the new synthetic lines instead of metal wire is a better way to go, that they will last longer and of course not be subject to the same corrosion problems. Either way, you need to consider preventive maintenance and change out the line on a scehdule before it needs to be done.
