Well, I've spent a lot of time with battens over the last few days, trying to learn their ornery ways. Luckily, I have 6 or 7 boat building books, and after digging for solutions, found the two-batten method of fairing a curve like Vintage's keel/stem line in Greg Rossel's book.
I've got a 1/4"x3/4" batten that took a definite set after bending around that curve, so I wonder if spruce would be better?
Not sure if I've ever seen a spruce board, though. Where'd you get it?
