this is a little different

I found this on craigslist.
Sleek Apocalyptic Survival Sailboat/Motorboat

Any thoughts on this? I've never seen or heard of this rig before seeing this posting.
The owner sent me this link for the designer/builder
RunningTideYachts, Ltd.

Looks cool at any rate

Called the 'Dyna rig' it's essentially a headsail-only setup with a bipod mast aft.

There was actually a Canadian (maybe BC?) built boat using this rig called the Asailia 27 - one or two were built back in the 80s and I've seen one around from time to time. Kind of a variation on the single sail concept used on the cat rigged boats like the Nonsuch, but using a 'genoa' instead of a main. No experience as to whether it works or not.

One would think that the much-less-vertical luff would reduce drive, but if you ignore the "mast" and look at it in profile the sailplan very much resembles that of an Arab dhow, and they move alright..

High windage mast, simple handling with good old headsail roller furling.. this one posted is the largest example I've seen built.

That is one big crab claw rig.

A few more shots of this rig.

I thought of the dhow when I first saw this boat. I suppose the trade off with the possibility of less drive is that you only have 2 roller furling headsails to deal with and no bowsprit?

The pic with the "kite shaped sail"(4th pic) looks as though it may be the same boat?, judging by the angle of the fore-sail and the blue stripes on the hull. The 1st pic looks as though shes moving along.
Why hasn't this rig caught on?

Bodega Bay is 30 min away from me, I'll have to go check her out.

Thanks all

It looks like the mast has been dramatically cut down.

It does, doesn't it??.... a couple of the pictures look like the top of the wishbone is the max height now....

Mast Cut down

Maybe they miscalculated the air draft clearance. "oops" :D

apparently it's had "a lot of work was done on it to make it a lot easier to sail"
looks like something was done to the keel as well?

That boat sat around Seattle for years. It was in my marina. I never saw it leave the dock. I think the mast, bi-pod thing was grp. The drawings were beautifully done but I'm not convinced the concept is valid.
