'83 Jason 35- stainless bolts in the bilge.
Well, yes, it's me again. Hull thickness Jace for the Jason 35?

Another question. (by the way, I got the boat. yep, she's mine)

Anyway, she has an encapsulated keel. So, in the bilge toward the back there is a built-out square of - I'm assuming - glass against the port wall of the bilge about halfway down, midway up from the bilge floor. And sticking out of the middle of it side by side are two stainless bolts with nuts tightened onto them. They are maybe three inches long and around 3/8ths of an inch thick. It appears to be aft of the lead ballast. It's just in front of the engine, if I remember correctly.

Any ideas what they are? Why they are there?

Congrats on the boat! The Jason is one beautiful boat!

No idea what the bolts are, but a pic would help. Why don't you contact Ted Brewer and ask him about the boat?

Let me guess, you bought the boat without having it lifted out for inspection??? Sounds like the bolts are to far forward for them to be holding a cutless bearing strut.

A grounding plate is a piece of metal that is in contact with water to provide the lightning with an easy path to neutral (ground).

On my Seafarer it is about 6" X 12" copper and has two bolts that go through the hull that is used to connect the rigging to it. It should have a heavy copper wire from each of the chainplates to the connections on the grounding plate.

Thanks so much, Mechsmith. That's great. I'm so glad to find out all these things about this boat. I'll look into running that copper wire. Why copper? Does it conduct better? An will running from the chainplates to those bolts direct the path of a strike straight into the water bypassing all of my other electronics such as lights, instruments, etc.? Oh, one more thing. Can I just put on two more nuts added onto the existing bolts connecting the copper wire? Will that be sufficient?

And by the way, to those wondering or have commented, no, I didn't have the Jason 35 lifted and inspected. No cash for such. But, for the asking price (nothing), I didn't think it practical.

It will help but keep your electronics as far away from the wires as possible. There is a corona effect near the wires that may cause some difficulties.

The copper wire is commonly sold in electrical supply stores as grounding wire for lightning rods. (The spikes commonly seen atop barns)

Use a paste (also sold for electrical connections) on all your connections and you should never have to worry about corrosion. The additional nuts should be sufficient.
