Thinking of buying a catamaran with dual Yanmar 27HP. The boat's tank is 50 gallons which seems small to me. How many hours should I expect to get, running single engine at a time, in normal cruising speed (assuming sail is down of course)?
Without knowing which Catamaran you are talking about, any answer would have a huge Fudge Factor, but typically, a roughly 27HP Diesel engine under near full load will consume between 2-3 Liters per hour. So mix in a little Fudge, that would be 2-3 Quarts per hour, or ~75 hours on a 50 Gallon tank; give or take 50%, on alternate Sundays.

(My little boat gets around 15MPG at 5 Knots; at around 1.75 Liters/hr. The Powerboat next to me uses 3GPH, going three times as fast, and it can probably make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.)
Our past boat had the 3GM 27 hp and we averaged .6 gph running at 24-2500 rpm. That is lower rpm than most run the engines so normal fuel consumption is probably around .75 gph.
Our cat has two HM35's, and they each burn about half a gallon per hour in the vicinity of 2000 RPM.
