replace mast step with mast in place?

Hi
I am in need of replacing the keel mast step on my "Carter 30". I am wondering if anyone has attempted this type of repair with the mast in place. That is by placing a prop next to the mast inside the cabin from the keel to under the cabin so as to manage the force of a jack placed on top of the cabin top (above the prop) & under the goose neck. With suitable bracing to stop the base of mast inside cabin from moving off-centre I was hoping to back off the rigging & raise the mast for a workable height of approx. 20cm. Could anyone see why this would or would not work as I have not heard of it done before.
Thanks
John
