Outside Chesapeake to Florida

Outside sailing from Chesapeake Bay to Florida how to avoid the Gulfstream.I enjoyed the sail up with the gulfstream pushing me I made good time.I would probly stop in at Charleston,St Augutine to Ft. Lauderdale.

What time of year are you talking about? This time of year, I'd go through NC on the ICW, then go outside at Beaufort Inlet. 2 night trip to Charleston. Another to St Augustine. Lauderdale is a bit too long for one night, a bit too short for two.

I go outside from Little Creek to Florida. Print a color copy of the GS velocities and watch your position. You can usually carry a counter-current most of the way down if you stay 4 - 5 miles out. Straight through it is a week or a bit less. Not terrible.

On the other hand, if you are ultimately heading to the Bahamas you can jump straight to the Abacos and be there in three days.

Hello Tri -

The Bahamas are a great place to spend the winter, and an even greater place to lick one's wounds. *grin* Some people enjoy the ICW but for me - and I expect others - getting to the Bahamas without droning along for days on end is really attractive.

Three days offshore is pretty easy.

We had a chance to help with a delivery of a MaineCat 41 in July from Melborne, FL up to Topsail Beach NC. 42 hours out side, from Cape Canaveral to CHS. (much better the motoring in the ditch)

I have no issue with taking our 34' tri across the stream, the Admiral still needs some reassurance.

We're helping out at the SSCA booth on Sunday of the show and I'm over at the Colligo booth for a few hours on Sat afternoon, filling in during a seminar. Any details of were the SailNet meet & greet might take place?

Port Annapolis Friday evening - dinghy dock is between D & E. There is a thread here somewhere.

To avoid the Gulfstream,sailing south,along the coast stay 4-5 miles off shore in the eddy currant. Yea at Cape Fear N.C. but then cant head out futher, Kind of close for solo sail.??? OZZ
