i am looking at buying a 1969 C&C 40 i would like to race and spend the odd weekend cruseing around ,it is in good shape,but is a boat that old worth it

Look, I know this might be construed as beating up on the newbie but really.

Why do people ask such lame questions ?

Is it worth it ? Is it worth what ? $2.50 and a free bucket of popcorn ? The GDP of New Zealand ? Sex with your labrador retriever ? What ?

I'm sure there are a bunch of people here with good advise on your possible new boat but come on...help 'em out just a little bit.

So...maybe a link to an advert, or at least a couple of pics and maybe just maybe an idea on the asking price ? It all helps you get some feedback. Which is I presume your intent.

Advocate....I have to admit that my first post to a sailing board was probably just as inane. Hopefully not but probably was.

Back then newbs were taken out and flayed alive just for the sport, today we live in gentler times I guess.

I really like the C&C 40 that I saw way back in the 80s. Not sure if it was the same design, but it had pilot berths and maybe a torpedo of lead at the bottom of the keel. Actually looked at buying one.

Get a survey, then you'll know what it's worth. We surveyed 2 other boats before we surveyed and bought ours. At one survey, the surveyor turn to me and said "you know this boat sunk, right?". EACH TIME, GETTING A SURVEY WAS THE BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SPENT.

Same surveyor on our boat, I asked, "Should I buy her?" And he said, "I just surveyed this same boat for $100,000 more."

(By "same" he meant make/model/etc. not the exact boat.)

BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT.

Not knowing all that much about C&C other than that as Cuthbertson and Cassian they were a highly regarded Canadian builder who sadly lost their way until suffering the final ignominy of falling into the hands of Tartan, I did a bit of Googling. As far as I can see they didn't make a 40'er until the 70s although one of their 60s designs was a well thought of 39'er.

I think there was a C&C 40 back then, but it was better known as a "Redline 40" To the OP - are you in BC? Are you looking at "Bedlam"?

If so this C&C 40 is a much different beast than the later 70s/80s versions. Not quite full keel but very much a deep hulled, wineglass shape - pretty boat on the water - this one has a black hull.
