How do you clean your bottom?

Don't know if you have any experience in this area, but do you have a recommendation for what to use on a racing-smooth bottom, painted with VC-17, for getting off the relatively soft growth we get on our bottoms in the Great Lakes? This stuff blows right off with a power washer, if you haul to clean. It may not seem like much to our ocean-going brethren, but, when racing, every fraction of a knot can count .

Depending on how often we sail, I have to pull the knotmeter transducer several times a year. All it takes to get it "clean" is a bucket of water and a small rosin brush.

I don't have much experience with VC17, 'cause we hardly ever see it here in a saltwater environment. But I know it's super easy to scrub off and I would recommend using something very soft, like a microfiber towel or diaper to clean it with.

To clean your own bottom you need a sponge, diaper, towel for soft paint. If its a hard racing bottom you can use a scotch brite pad. Pretty much the softest thing you can use to clean it, as FastBottoms said.

I've tried the PVC thing, and it didn't work for me. The flossing with a towel actually worked pretty well, but you can't get the keel. There's no easy way to do this. If you want to do it right, you'll have to get wet. And chances are, you're going to get cold too.

Check with your state department of ecology website. Here in Washington it's illegal to scrub in the water bottoms with ablative bottom paints. Hard paints are OK. The fine's about $10K
