help- lost jib halyard

In my haste to get the boat stripped and ready for Irene - this novice sailor lost the jib halyard - it went right up and out of the roller furling track and to the top of the mast.

I have somone who has agreed to climb my mast and retrieve the halyard - but then how do I rethread it into the track?

I had the yard put the jib on for me in the spring as this is my first year sailing so I really had no idea how the thing attached.

I have a Catalina 27 tall rig.

Different systems work slightly differently - two locations for info:

1) find out what make and model track you have, should be in owner's handbook, if no handbook then

2) call Catalina directly to find out type of system

Generally all MFR's of these parts have their manuals one line these days, once you have the make and model, go online to find manual.

For starters, even people who think they know what they are doing on boats loose a halyard up the mast now and then but just don't like to admit it. It is all fixable though.

I don't understand if the jib halyard came through the mast head altogether, or if one end is stuck at the mast head, or which end of the halyard is stuck up there. Also depends if the halyard is routed inside the mast our outside.

A picture or 2 might help. You will figure it out.

Maybe a quick call to the yard and see if they remember how they did it, could solve all your problems.

I'm probably not going to be of much help haveing a hanked jib and a mast I manually step but I do have a thought. If you know an electrician ask them if they have a fish tape, it's whats used to pull wire through conduit. You'll have to feed it up through your jib track until it comes out the top and back down to the deck, attach your jib hayrard and pull it back down through the track.
May not work for you but that's what I've got. Good luck!

Maybe even a long skinny piece of plastic pipe (a couple of lengths of 1 or 2 inch drain line taped together) with a wad of tape at the end would get the halyard down if it's not stuck?

I am having a hard time picturing what you are saying.
My halyard attaches to the top of the upper swivel, the sail head attaches to the swivel, and the luff of the sail is attached to the foil with the bolt rope and runs in the extrusion, but the halyard is not run inside of anything.

I'm with Brother Tim on this one -- I'd be really surprised to find out that there's a roller furler out there that uses an internal halyard. Halyard attached to the head of the sail; luff tape keeps the luff of the jib attached to the foil of the furler.

I think it'll just be a quick trip to the top of the mast to get the halyard and back down.
