Looking to assume loan and live aboard 45-50 ft sailboat in Southern California

I am a high school Biology teacher working in the Orange Unified School district for 12 years. My husband and I have been talking about buying a sailboat and living aboard for years. We have started the process by putting our house up for sale and joining Aventura Sail club. We figured we will have to rent a house until a live aboard slip becomes available and then buy a boat; however, I was wondering if there were any loopholes that might allow for us to quicken the process? Perhaps assume a loan or acquire a live aboard slip in an area that might not be as obvious as Los Alamitos harbor? We have been looking at especially interested in Beneteau around the $120-200,000 price range. Thank you!

Try using "owner financing" or "seller financing" or "seller will hold note" as search terms in yachtworld.com. You can limit the search to your price range.

Often you can buy a boat and take over the slip, by it may be hard to find something willing to let you assume the note. But if you find the right person you might get lucky. But likely only if they are under water and want to get out. Of course I don't mean literally under water as that might change the livability of the boat!

I lived aboard and held a professional job for years. It's a great life style in the right marina. Marinas tend to be funny with live aboards - the first answer is usually no. They also tend to have a different answer once they know you and know the boat is well kept. They do notice things. Buying a boat with a slip attached would help. Not sure what your experiences is or what the local market is like but I can tell you the live aboard transition is much easier if you already have a boat in the marina that you want to stay at. Shortcuts - very few that are good ideas.
