SailNet Folks Are The Best!!!

I havn't been on SN too long, but let me congratulate you all. I am an IT-type who has been on the Internet since it was ARPANET. That's way back before there was a web browser and the World Wide Web. Back in the day we had few tools to communicate i.e., text-based e-mail, Archie, Gopher, and USENET. The Internet was pretty much a tool to share academic information only. Anything commercial was absolutely taboo, and any attempts to advertise your product would result in a quick expulsion from service. So here we are 20 years later and we have all this commercial stuff and GUI (Graphical User Interface) tools and bandwidth for anyone to use for whatever purpose. During those early years, and right up to present day, there have always been these groups like SailNet to bring people with common interests together to share ideas, knowledge, and opinions. In each and everyone of these "communities" there were always countless folks whose primary purpose for participitation was to toot their own horn. Everywhere in every group this was SOP. No matter what one had to contribute or ask for help with, to no matter what group, there were plenty of know-it-alls who would strike you down and attempt to make you feel like an idiot. I guess they felt it made them a bigger person. For days they would pile on. Then, almost no matter what timeframe, there would always be another Alpha-Hotel come along, who has just finished reading three days of slamming someone, only to add the same pompous insults to the thirty previous.

Not so here! You folks are fabulous! Kind, gentile, sharing your knowledge without reservation or purpose. SailNet is absolutely the finest group of folks I have ever had the pleasure of communicating with and learning from. This is very rare in a society of instant communication and instant gratification. Hats-off to everyone! Keep up the good work! I really can't wait to get back together with other human-beings for some serious down-time in the cockpit scoring more libations and intelligent conversation.

Well all I can say is that this place goes in cycles like any other fourm and is definetly better then it use to be there for awhile... but it wont take long for your bubble to get busted Im afraid..there will always be thoes looking to be top "IT's" around these things Im afraid...much like a bar you frequent...you learn who to stay away from...and whom to engage with...I just change bars for awhile if needed and let the bouncers do their job till the place clears out..

I have a similar background to you and I have witnessed this bad behavior on the old USENET sailing.xxx group (what was it's name?). I think it is still around or at the least it is archived somewhere. There was always at least 1 pompous azzhole who would jump in and flame the unwitting poster. Mostly, it was the same people flaming the group over and over and apparently enjoying belittling their fellow humans; their egos seemed to thrive on this kind of behavior.
Have you visited Sailing Anarchy (SA) yet? I'm pretty sure that most of the folks we are talking about hang out over there. And as Stillraining just pointed out, sailnet is open to the public so now and then things get a bit out of hand. That makes the bouncers (moderators) job a long suffering, thankless position. Hats off to the mods!

Ha! So you've been to that Brewpub too! Nothing like a good IPA to make that DD pay for everyone's cab ride.
