Cutting fiberglass
 

We have bought new ports for our boat. There are two sizes but the larger one is a little bigger than the actual cutout for the old ports. I was just wondering what is the best tool to use for cutting the openings a little larger. There is also a curved spigot in the new ports that wasn't there before. Thanks!

I've had good results by using a reciprocating jig saw with a fine tooth blade. Be sure to protect the gelcoat by applying a wide masking tape border to the gel-coat surface, before marking the cut. Naturally, the interior finish needs to be considered as well.

Spiral cutter (Roto-Zip) is another good option. But do use tape to protect the gelcoat from chipping and scarring.

1. Tape the finished side before you cut, no matter what you use to cut it

2. Draw a line just shy of what you need. You can cut to there and then cut a bit more where needed.

3. I've finished cuts with a dremmel or similar tool.
