Challenger 40 1973 Mastep

Our recently puchased 73 challenger 40 has a heavily corroded mast step.The original mount was laminated into the sides of the hull with 1/4 steel plates which have rotted .Has anyone run in to this problem and have any tips as to how to proceed with this repair? Thanks, JD in Bocas

I don't know if you have tackled this problem yet, but I'm in the middle of rebuilding the mast step, and undergoing a complete re- rig. I found removing the mast step fairly straight forward, and did not have to destroy any interior woodwork to do it. If you still need info, I'll be glad to discuss my progress so far.
