SailNet OK

I'd like to drop a note of thanks to the Admins here for the splendid job they've done. Unlike the barnacle-encrusted slow plod of a few weeks back, SailNet is now close-hauled and screaming along just fine.

Whoever you are - well done!

Ummmm--those improvements in performance came at the expense of dropping the very popular email lists. At least for us pearsonites all that email traffic has since gone to yahoo. Lots of people don't have the time to wadfe through the bulletin boards.

On the whole, Sailnet saved the expense of a new server but pissed off all the people who used the old email lists. False economy in my book.

Mitch...you have cause and effect mixed up. The mail lists would have been dropped one way or another. Servers are no big $$ item.
Yes...the speed came as a result of re-using the old sail net mail server but that was NOT the reason the lists were discontinued. The new server for the forums is merely a byproduct of the business decision to discontinue the mail lists.
As such, the 100k plus users will now have a much better web experience.

SVAuspicious is on a distinguished road
Been through this before. The old lists, mostly, are alive and well on Yahoo and Google. Sailnet lost access to a lot of people who can't be bothered with web fora, particularly those on thin pipes who won't sit and wait for all the images and ads to load. Sailnet made their chose. Their resources, their decision.

Cam, I know perfectly well that servers are not all that expensive. I'm not confusing anything--it's SAilnet who's confused. Sailnet made a bad business decision on the email lists. Lots of people from the email lists will never darken their web portal again. As I have said before the price of the goodwill lost far outweighs the cost of a server. and I think it was Admin jeff who said the email lists had to go so that Sailnet could redeploy it. If they can't afford a server, how much longer will Sailnet be around?

And do you really think 100,000 people use the other Sailnet web services? SA probably has a much better chance of hitting that number than Sailnet does.

Not much sense arguing with you Mitch...you don't know the facts and I am not at liberty to discuss them and nothing will change.

Crikey!! It's mighty hard to drop a compliment around here without it getting lost in the wind..

Fact: SailNet is actually usable now.

Don't you guys ever look on the bright side??

Yes Sailnet is faster, but I still don't have e-mail notification to subscribed threads. Maybe I should talk to my friends in high--er um low places.
Or maybe Sailnet is trying to tell me something.

Den...we're not TRYING to tell you anything!
Hartley...thanks...will pass your compliment on to Admin.
Still...they were lists of owners of specific model/make boatsas well as a few specialty topics (live-aboard etc.) that would post via email to the entire group for discussion and be notified when a new message or reply was posted. Sailnet ran the mail server to distribute these messages for a number of years and still keeps the archive of knowledge which you can view under the resources tab. No advertising...no non-group members. Such lists still exist on google and yahoo.
