I have noticed issues as well and an odd thing is that ad pages seem to get in the history and that seems to slow things way down when hitting the back button. Another odd thing is on the main page, the menu does not "unfurl" but if I am on any other of the forum pages it does.
IE8, WinXP SP3. All the latest updates.
Please don't tell me to use a different browser as I am not wishing to get in to a "flame war". We all use what we use for our own reasons.....

Tony,I am the facility engineer, IT firewalls are there however they don't slow down data, they block sites with keywords in search mode. They don,t mess with me, I control UPS, genset, elect and all facility and HVAC systems... I wasn't trying to be a nudge, it just seems lately I,m looking at a blank screen and a swirling icon more.. Red

It seems to mostly be advert servers, IME. I'm running Firefox on Linux boxen. I've installed Adblocker Plus. When I run into a balky advert server, I add it to the blocklist. Sailnet has improved significantly since I started doing that.

My point was I shouldn't HAVE to switch browsers to use this site. That mindset is just plain stupid.......... light the torches....

HTML and CSS are written to standards. Microsoft declines to adhere to these standards. If that failure to follow the rules negatively impacts functionality, how is it the responsibility of the content developer? If the design of the browser's rendering engine results in memory leaks and massive inefficiency, how is that the responsibility of the content developer?
You can be as petulant about it as you like, but if you choose to use a broken product then the responsibility is yours.

I'm quite sad that my first post ever has nothing to do with sailing.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when a few people are having problems with a site, some moron has to chime in with "What browser are you using?".
I am a network engineer, and additionally, my company, in which I own, does web design, asp.net, php, vb.net, ms sql and mysql development. And search engine optimization.
This site uses vBulletin/MySql - one of the most popular forum software/database solutions in the world. I browse many forums using this combination at work and home, on Macs, Pc's, using IE/Safari/Firefox, and I can tell you as I've been "lurking" here, the last couple of weeks this site has been SLOW!.
And slow on all platforms.
The problem is with the ads or the tracking (stats.ads.is). No question about it. Not IE, connection, or anything else.
Hopefully soon I will make a post on a sailing matter.

PS - IE7 and IE8 have about 70-80% of the market share. That makes it the DEFACTO STANDARD. Regardless of what w3c or any other organization says.
PSS - Many people may view this site in a security sensitive work setting, AND CAN ONLY view it in IE!

Asking what browser a person is using is a valid troubleshooting question. Some servers, due to the web daemon they are running and the various technologies they are using are known to have issues with some browsers. Only a Mircosoft fanboy moron would say that just because Microsoft illegally used it monopoly power to force a sorry piece of **** program like Internet Explorer on the vast majority of the computers, that it qualifies as a standard of any sort.
I'd point out that France and Germany—the countries—have issued warning about using IE in its various versions as major security risks. The fact that corporations have locked their configurations and force people to use IE is no excuse for the problems that IE has.
Yes, the majority of the problems on Sailnet are due to bottlenecking from the advertising servers that are used to generate the ads.
I am willing to bet that your company is a Microsoft partner and that many of the websites you've designed aren't W3C compliant and buggy as crap on something other than IE.
