There used to be - it was causing such a ruckus it was dropped, so the rep system is really just an 'attaboy' function.

If someone here ticks you off, you have an ignore list you can put them on if that helps. Not ideal, I know, but the rep system as it is gives us the least grief.

My guess is that much (perhaps most) of the negative feedback given had to do with political-type feelings, rather than anything directly sailing and/or boat related. Be that as it may, I personally don't give a whole lot of weight to "rep power" anyway; I've seen enough completely bogus statements by those with loads of such "rep" to pretty much ignore it. It seems to be more of a bunch of folks giving each other "'atta-boy" back slaps than anything else. Now, some might say, "He's just got his nose outta joint because he doesn't have my 'rep power'!!" But, that isn't true at all. In fact, if the mods want to permanently set my "rep power" to zero, that's fine by me. The whole thing, while probably originally well-intentioned, has become more than a bit clique-ish, IMHO.

The only posters that don't occasionally garner a little negativity seem to be the ones that are smart enough to never state their opinions.

I find that while I can sit with friends and have very passionate face to face discussions, taking diametrically opposed positions and enjoy the experience, That experience doesn't translate to the internet. It took me way too long to realize that.
When you are talking with people that you know and who know you, it's possible to be passionate and still be friends.
We are all complex individuals who are all too human and all too sensitive. My friends know that even though I take the environment very seriously, I'm still a small business owner that chafes at excess government regulation and taxes. They know that it's stupid to judge a person without considering the whole person and their whole personality.
The internet is just like driving. Once people get behind the wheel, they start dealing with other cars, not other people. People sort of feel anonymous behind the wheel and behind the keyboard.

It's possible to remember that you are dealing with real people when you're on the internet, it just takes effort.
You just have to treat them like friends.
I wish I could remember that.

You don't need to be able to give negative rep, you have an ignore button. It was a good thing when they did away with it. The whole rep thing is kind of silly anyway.

Except some users were attempting to change there usernames to avoid the ignore button. Didn't work out so well...
