The concern I have with the edit button is those who use it as a statement. Look at the large number of CandCs posts in threads he started which he later edited to "..." , redering the thread virtually useless info wise, or Sailaway21's attempt to erase his contributions when he decided to take his ball and go home.
Rather than editing a thread to add new info, why not just update the thread with a new post? This also serves a second purpose, reviving an old thread and bringing it back to the front page, whereas editing an older post leaves a thread out of the spotlight.
What's the point in editing if no one knows that you have added new info?

Actually Sway didn't do that here. He did it over at the Alex-Show. And I don't blame the guy. He took a hell of a lot of crap...from "friends".
As far as people who bait then edit - they should just be labelled a "Nancy" for 6 months and ridiculed mercilessly.

So I and the other 99.8% of well behaved members should be punished because 0.2% of this forum are act in an immature, non grown up manner?
Sorry when you write posts as detailed, in-depth and as long as I often do I am NOT going to simply make fixes 150 posts away from an OP or the post I need to edit. That is 150% unacceptable to me.

It's called google and the FUTURE! All of these post show up in google searches and will 20 years from now if SN is still around. I want the post someone is READING to be well written, accurate and for as many of the links and images to work as possible not 75 posts away posting the "edits" to a post made five pages ago....
So, lets alienate the well behaved posters in favor of the 0.2% of trouble makers, who probably should not be here to begin with?????
Sounds great and if the admins side with you... I'm out....

Actually for chronic trolls and baiters they should simply be warned then banned. Gets rid of a LOT of problems.
We're now letting a select few trouble makers dictate and ruin what has been a GREAT forum...

Well, as one who was always labelled a "chronic troll and baiter" - that's always a bit of a subjective line. And I know first hand that the mods around here are extremely fair.
So let's not get carried away. They'll do the right thing. And this is STILL the best forum out there - even without an edit button.

Do I understand you correctly Faster, that some people were editing their posts to make things they were quoted on, but not with the quote button, disappear?

The moderators here are great guys, I'm sure they'll figure out a way that posts can be edited for legitimate needs such as Mainesail has explained.

Good people,
Being the weekend I'm on boat most of the time but we'll be discussing this during the week. Bear with us for a day or so.

I fully agree that one should be able to edit their own post. This is an entertainment forum, not a courtroom. Nobody needs to prove anything, IMHO. If you don't like what you said, for any reason, then go change it.
Ironically, a thread I posted to a few days ago was resurrected and I saw my note when scrolling. When I saw it, I realized where a missing reply to another thread went. I posted in the wrong place. Simple cut and paste solution. I can't believe that isn't available now.
In a different twist to this, one of the members here actually edited my post when he quoted it (he is also the only resident of my ignore list now). It may have been a lame attempt to be funny, but he has a greater propensity to be argumentative, manipulative and infintile, You can see that I never edited my original post, so its clear he did so and he even reference that he was doing so. Still, I found it interesting that you could quote someone and change their quote.
The point is that the system is not, nor can it be made bullet proof, so put the edit feature back.
Edit: I learned long ago to avoid the mud wrestling in OT, my anecdote above took place here.
