New Motor for Seafarer 31

Just purchased a seafarer 31 and was told the previous owner used a tohatsu 9.9hp dropped down through the stern lazarette. Anybody know anything about the Instalift? Is there a kit I need, do I get a short or length outboard?

Seafarer 31 motor

Here is a link to the Seafarer Manual. Doesn;t say much about the InstaLift, but does mention to use a short shaft motor. I have a Seafarer 31 with the lazarette, but it has an inboard diesel. The lazarette has a piece of wood bolted to the front edge of the opening where the doors are, but it looks like it was just added in place of any lift mechanism.

Talking Thanks

Thanks, that PDF will be handy. I think i'm just going to instal another tohatsu 9.9 in there. I'm a little worried she'll be underpowered in strong winds when approaching a dock (especially an unfamiliar one) but I'll just have to avoid that.

My S29 came with a 9.9 Yamaha 4-stroke. The previous owner used her on a lake. I've found that the 9.9 is underpowered in a coastal area especially with a lot of current.

Just purchased a 20hp Yamaha w/remote control and will install in the next week or so. I've also changed the prop to a lower pitch as recommended by Yamaha for heavier boats.

The Yamaha 20 hp motor is a little heavier than the 9.9, but probably not as heavy as the 25 hp 2-stroke motor originally installed. I am concerned about the overall length of the shaft fitting in through the door opening when raised, but I'm willing to make a modification to the stern if necessary in order to gain the needed horse power.

Well, we dropped in the 9.9 this weekend and I found it to have plenty of power. It was blowing 10-15knts (not sure of the current) and I felt very secure maneuvering around, I had to stay light on the throttle. I appreciate all the opinions, maybe Ill find in a couple of years I'll want to up the HP.

Are you using the 2-stroke or 4-stroke 9.9 or the 2-stroke or 4-stroke 9.8? The reason I ask is that the 9.9's can be easily converted to a 15.
