Navigation puzzle

3 Attachment(s)
Today at 1:15 PM was at approx. 41 15N and 072 03W
As you can see by my track

I did a quick check on my GPS and noticed I was very close to max ebb for the Race so figured I would turn around. The wind was very good about 15 knots.

I figured with that much current against me I would only make a couple knots overground.

As you can see I was going 4 to 5 knots.

Any explanation as to why.

The only thing I can thing of unless you see a dumb mistake is that I was just out of the current by a few hundred yards.

It would seem that anyplace in that area would have significant current though so I'm perplexed.

How close to the current station were you? That can make a lot of difference.

What your speed SOG or through the water?

I don't know about that area, but currents often meander, eddy, and swirl. The numbers published are probably the average for that general area, "your milage may vary."

The wind and speed gods looked favorably upon you today. Sometimes all the data just gets crushed by whims of mother nature. maybe your just getting to be a better sailor?

Hi David, your screen shot shows 3.6 mph which is 3.1 kn. Am I missing something?

Currrent like wind is whimsical and whirly.
A screen shot is but a moment in time.

I was hoping you would take a look at this for me.

The first picture shows the location of the current station.
It is the one labled The Race and is the second one on the list.
My location is on the third picture.

The only explanation I can come up with what you are implying.
That I was just far enough out of the race to have less current.

That really doesn't make a lot of sense however as the race is knows for very strong currents due to the bottom going from 200' to 50' so one would think the current would be everyplace in that neighborhood with some variation.

Typically but in this location it is 3+ knots and my whole return trip was over an hour faster than expected.

That is the whole problem.
I was very surprised to make that speed against what I expected to be a strong ebb current.

This is a 24' boat that probably can only do 6 in perfect conditions.

Maybe it is as simple as that. I had perfect conditions and was making 6 through the water and 3 over ground.
That may be the answer.

That is very generous of you, more likely I'm missing something important.
