Garmin BlueChart g2 or BlueChart g2 Vision

Can someone explain what the Vision charts provide that the basic charts do not?

FYI- The area of interest is Belize/Ambergris Caye and boating will be limited to offshore day trips to fish and coastal / bay snorkeling.

Thanks

I believe you get birds eye view of inlets, marinas, etc. Most of that stuff you can pick up online so I never bothered with the vision.

From Garmin's website:

Get Auto Guidance, high resolution satellite imagery, and above and below the water 3-D perspective with BlueChart g2 Vision.

When you say basic do you mean paper chart or the GPS's base map ? I purchased a Garmin 421 chart plotter and the Vision chip chart And I love it . So If you are talking about the base map ,I think it is useless with out the Vision chip.

He is comparing g2 to g2 vision.

The base map in some units like my 3206 are full functioning detailed g2 charts. No need for vision.

When I said "basic" I meant the BlueChart g2 without the "vision" enhancement.

I have a related question...can the BlueChart g2 charts be updated and if so how? I have a Garmin chartplotter that I think dates from around 1996. It has the embedded BlueCharts. So, the electronic charts are getting dated. I was wondering if buying the vision chip might be the only way to update the charts.

You can purchase an update from Garmin. They will send you a card with the update on it so you can install it and send the card back to them.

I have the Vision card for my 441S chartplotter. I don't find the satellite imagery and aerial photos to be that helpful. I was dissapointed to find they are quite low resolution and lack detail. What I do really like though is the auto guide function. Much like a car GPS, select a point on the map and it will automatically plot the most direct course navigating around the shallows. You set the minimum depth and bridge clearance. This makes plotting your course so simple and knowing your ETA (if you can sail the course).
