If you attach a snubber to the anchor chain and once deployed you let extra chain out, doesn't it accomplish the same thing?
I'm having a hard time imagining how a snubber would keep the rode clear of the keel.

Barquito: if I attach a 15 ft 3 strand line onto my anchor chain and cleat it off -a snubber- then let out 10 feet or more of chain it would tend to keep the snubber line stay almost vertical at the bow avoiding any wrap. Just saying ....

Can anyone suggest strategies to prevent it from recurring?

use a second anchor with a few feet of chain rode on both and it will never happen again

I can see, now, how this could work. As long as the loop of chain is long and low enough to clear the keel. That is a good idea.
