Summer Sailstice and Sonar Data Collection

The Summer Sailstice is coming up Saturday June 21st.
There are going to be a lot of sailors out and covering thousands of miles of ground. This is a great time for us to contribute back to the boating community!

For those of you with transducers and nav units on your boat that can take a micro chip, I encourage you to collect sonar data and contribute it to be included in bathymetry charts.
Here are instructions of how to do this:
Raymarine: Raymarine | Plotter tutorial | Navionics
Garmin: Garmin | Plotter tutorial | Navionics
Humminbird: Humminbird | Plotter tutorial | Navionics

Think how much of a difference in charts we could make if just some of us recorded data as we sailed!

Here is an example of how sonar data collection can make a difference in the map of an area:

Let's make this the best Summer Sailstice ever by giving back to our boating community by improving map data!

Let me know if you have questions about collecting data to help improve maps for our fellow sailors!

Re: Summer Sailstice and Sonar Data Collection

Any way to submit to other open source chart outfits, unlike Navionics which is a commercial provider?

Re: Summer Sailstice and Sonar Data Collection

I'm sure there is somehow. We've always used Navionics on our boats (all of them, from the 20' Aquasport to the 30' Hunter to the 40' Beneteau) and when they started allowing users to submit data to update maps we jumped on it.
We submit sonar data to help other sailors in the areas that we sail. Maybe I'm tooting my own horn but I feel like it's been pretty useful to other people. We're run across a LOT of sailors using the Navionics charts throughout the eastern seaboard, the Keys, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. I know I'm grateful to the other boaters who have been submitting sonar data. The Bahamas charts have improved drastically over the past several years.
