off course alarm app?

For navigation I use Garmin 76c and also a android chart app on my phone.
The problem is my autopilot has quit twice when I was below.
The Garmin does have a off track alarm but its a quiet buzzer.
It would be nicer if my phone would ring.
I just can't find a off track or compass heading alarm app for my phone. Does anyone know of one? Thank You

Hey,

I don't mean to be a jerk, but how long are you below and who is keeping watch?

Not long but I do sail the backwaters in the Keys surrounded by thin water.

Re: off course alarm app?

IMHO, YOU should know when the boat is off course, not some dinky app. A few telltales: the boat lurches differently, the sun coming through the portlights is coming from the other side of the boat, the autopilot is making weird sounds. Get your head out of your phone.

Colregs does not tell you to get your head out of your phone.

Try reading Colregs before being so wrong and aggressive about it.

Re: off course alarm app?

Wow did this get off on a poor tangent!
After this posting I'm going to try to contact the author of anchor drag apps. Just adding ifthen gps math to the existing app would add off course alarms quite easily.
Thank you Faster for your response.

Re: off course alarm app?

I have to agree that I could not take my eye off navigation, unless I already knew there was nothing to hit, while I was distracted. At a few knots, nothing comes up very fast. If one is that close to danger, I really don't get the alarm being helpful. Perhaps good redundancy though.

If I was on a long openwater passage, it would be nice to know if something was wrong, as I don't necessarily position myself to be able to see the chartplotter continuously.

But, unless one is motoring a straight line, like a stinkpotter, what is the course one wants protected anyway? Trimming and making 5 degree wind corrections might exceed the tolerance of the course.
