I have to agree that I could not take my eye off navigation, unless I already knew there was nothing to hit, while I was distracted. At a few knots, nothing comes up very fast. If one is that close to danger, I really don't get the alarm being helpful. Perhaps good redundancy though.
If I was on a long openwater passage, it would be nice to know if something was wrong, as I don't necessarily position myself to be able to see the chartplotter continuously.
But, unless one is motoring a straight line, like a stinkpotter, what is the course one wants protected anyway? Trimming and making 5 degree wind corrections might exceed the tolerance of the course.
