How often do you update your charts?

I use a navigation app on my phone and iPad. The data is updated thousands of times a week so I try to make sure I update my maps fairly often. Same for the chartplotter, though I don't have a wifi enabled unit so I have to remove my chip and put it in the computer to update the charts. Not a big deal because it's worth peace of mind knowing I have the latest charts. I'm mostly boating in south Florida, the Bahamas, and the North Carolina coast.

I'm curious to know how often others cruisers update their charts (and what area are you cruising because I think that makes a big difference in how often you need to update your charts).

Once a week while actively going somewhere, otherwise whenever I think about it.

Rarely, there has to be a good specific reason for me to do so.
In my limited cruising area I usually know where I am and what local problems there might be.

Once a week. That is, after all, how often the notices come out.

There's a term for charts that haven't been updated in more than a week. We call them "out of date".

Large commercial. Yup, review weekly notices for area.

Others. OCD much? A few years. Heck, the really changeable areas often are not charted, and most of the soundings off the beaten track are from the 70s. I suppose it would be interesting to see what the changes were that were of importance to the cruiser. Other than ATN number changes, I'm betting few. I'm also pretty sure that I have never grounded on anything where is would have mattered. It was either a floating object (log) or gunkhole (70s data).

How often do you read the Notices and Coast Pilot? There is LOT of navigation information in there that is NOT on the charts, and rather few cruisers have ever read either one. I only studied them when writing a guide book.

How often do you update your charts?

When I went to the Marquesas years ago the paper chart was from the late 1800s survey by the French Navy. Our GPS showed Nuka Hiva to be exactly one mile further west than the chart showed. Wonder if they have updated it?

Re: How often do you update your charts?

As a recreational sailor, I think it depends on what you're navigating. If you're offshore, even coastal, not much changes on a chart. Harbors are a different matter, whose ATNs do change, along with bridge clearances, etc. Nevertheless, it doesn't matter how recently you purchased your charts, the depth soundings may still be generations old.

My paper charts get fairly old, before being replaced. As noted above, the electronic resources are much more current. One can even download the latest NOAA chart too. Not much reason to keep the printed that up to date anymore.

Re: How often do you update your charts?

I subscribe to the weekly Local Notice to Mariners via email. I will note anything that affects me locally, or on a route if traveling. We had a major disruption to passages on the East River this fall, when the Pope was in town and the UN was in session.
