What to do with old charts and chart-kits?

The prior owner of my boat left a fairly large number of old (late 1980s to early 2000s) paper charts and chart kits on the boat. Most of them cover the Gulf of Mexico, Florida or the Bahamas. I don't have a present need for any of them, and if I ever do get to do more than a weekend cruise, I'd want to get current ones before I left.

I don't have a good place to store them, but I it seems wasteful to just toss them in the recycle bin. Any suggestions on what I should do with these charts?

Re: What to do with old charts and chart-kits?

We have an area at our marina where anything we don't need is placed.. generally anything worthwhile has found a new home within the hour - even old charts. People starting out with limited funds would appreciate even somewhat out of date charts for free.

Another idea.. I have an old 1940s chart of the area where I grew up framed on the wall.. nautical 'art'. You could also laminate them onto a table top, make place-mats, lots of neat things to do with old charts.

Wallpaper. I'm not kidding.
I know an old guy who wallpapered one wall of his Den with old Charts. Wallpaper paste below, and varnish on top.
It may seem rather frivolous, but his plotted courses in pencil remain intact, underneath the varnish.

I have a bunch of Pre-War Admiralty Charts. (Petulantly, the coast of Ireland still shows Kingstown, instead of D˙n Laoghaire.)
Unfortunately, my Den is floor to Ceiling Bookcases. So...
Flooring? Lay them down instead of carpeting, and Epoxy over them? For sensitive reasons, I don't see why a throw-rug couldn't be placed over Coastal Cuba, or Texas.

There's definitely a market; whether for a collector or a sailor needing backup nav systems. In other words: sell them!

There _is_ a Market, but Old Charts shouldn't be depended on for Navigation. That's why there are New Charts.
Old Charts are for Nostalgia and for... Hunting Treasure.

Not so much what to do as a good use, but I have an original art (print) of a Regatta painted on 13241 Nantucket sound. Easier to come by the charts than the talent for such things. It is one of my favorite things. I had a friend wallpaper his kitchen years back and it worked well in a nautical theme.

Leroy Neiman does some cool serigraphs over charts

Once the charts get really old they are great antiques. I have a few

1604 chart of the west coast of Africa.
1748 chart of the the same area with an enlargement of a fort in the Gambia River
1750 chart of the Med
1813 chart of the Caribbean
1859 chart of the southern Gulf Islands. It is incredibly accurate; the name changes are interesting

Re: What to do with old charts and chart-kits?

I would imagine they would be useful to someone since most of the information is still valid and what has changed can be updated on the chart. I also have a huge pile of charts that came with the boat (Atlantic coast from Patagonia to east coast USA, Caribbean, Med, Indian Ocean, Red Sea, north Atlantic etc.). As I would never be able to buy all these charts new, I'm hanging on to them to update as I need them. I also have electronic charts, but that's another story. I still like to have a paper chart in my hands when coming into a new port.
