Re: Navigators: The Sextant you own and have a License?

This old thread showed up at the bottom of one on traditional navigation.
i thought the original question interesting though irellevent to my current recreational sailing. my licence an old 2nd mate FGN expired decades ago with STCW 95 and continued proficency.

A pristine Frieberger. also an old Tayama not in good shape

I never used to carry my own relying on the ships.
My favourite was a Ziess. the Frieberger is the same.
I used Cooks, Plaths Kelivin hughes and Tayamas. I used a Davis and was not impressed. Spoiled by good ones.
Never used an Astra.
Ps canad has its own system and does not use RYA although there is a couple of schools who teach RYA I think there is one in Florida as well

Re: Navigators: The Sextant you own and have a License?

I have an old Davis MK20 that I used to teach myself the rudiments of Celestial Navigation a few years ago. Even with a plastic sextant and a little luck I can generally fix my position to within 10nm of what the GPS tells me. That is, if I don't get seasick while trying to use the sextant.

Never forget them. Do something to prevent it from happening again.

Master any gross tons steam or motor. Master of towing any gross tons. Sailing endorsement. First class pilot. PIC, TOAR, STCW, GMDSS, ARPA, QMED, Lifeboat, and every unlicensed deck endorsement available including AB.

I have one of those plastic sextants you can get for a couple dollars. But I'm pretty sure I can navigate by glancing at the sky. ;}
