Surprised to see no mention so far of heaving to, which is great for reefing, going forward for any other reason, or just having a rest.... providing you've got a little sea room.

Just think about your drift while heaved to and do so on the appropriate tack.

I had a 16ft daysailer which was too sensitive to my weight to just go forward while sailing, so got pretty good at heaving to for a short while.
