Open Ocean Racing Tactics

I am looking for a book or articles on tactics and using weather for open ocean racing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Open Ocean Racing Tactics

Good question. I'd love to know as well. I've looked at Amazon and most of the books are geared toward match racing....which I have little interest in.

Re: Open Ocean Racing Tactics

Any weather book would be a good one. Tactics are more of boat on boat, on the fly kinda stuff. Strategy is more of what you use in the ocean. Strategy is your 'plan'.

I'm reading North U's weather book now, its ok, not nearly as interesting as the Trim and Tactics books. Not sure if that's the subject matter, or the writting style. It does relate it to sailboat racing, which is nice.

Downwind is fast.

Upwind isn't.

It's mostly weather-hunting, trying to avoid calms and upwind work.

Re: Open Ocean Racing Tactics

Many ocean racers use programs such as Expedition which uses grib files, current information, and polars to determine the best course to steer.

Open Ocean Racing Tactics

Thanks everyone. The reason for the question was to see if there was any gouge on the best way to play fronts and weather systems to maximize speed and distance toward where you need to go. I guess it is basically a strategy question given the responses above.

Re: Open Ocean Racing Tactics

BTW - the NOAA weatherfax is available via SSB. As a visual learner, that is what I prefer. When I deliver Vic Maui boats back home I also have it sent via email through a Sat Phone. I also get grib files this way.

Re: Open Ocean Racing Tactics

Presumably you are talking about very long passages? O/W you are stuck in the weather system you are in.

VMG vs. wind and wave direction and amplitude, and current/eddy direction and strength: Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers - PassageWeather, NOAA (OPC) surface & 500mb WeFax charts, ... and of course direct SSB/HAM contact with professional 'weather routers'
