Bruce,
That was my question. That seemed to be the more prudent route. However my friend said the trip would be offshore.

I would see if you could convince him to get south of Cape Hatteras and then spring offshore from there. No matter what you do it will be a pretty bumpy ride this time of year.

While the frequency for storms is highest from late fall to early spring, there are also plenty of days when its not storming. For instance today the winds are less than 10 knots. If your friend is experienced I would have no problem with this trip. There are plenty of places along the coast and before hatteras that you can get a weather up date before continuing on. (Beaufort or Wrightsville Beach). I would imagine the mast is too tall on a 47 foot boat for the ICW. (IT was on the 47 foot boat I was just on) BTW avg temps in feb are 47 degrees. Bring plenty of layers to go under your foul weather gear and you should be fine. Good luck and tell us about it when you get back.-thomas

I meant plenty of places to duck into, Wrightsville Beach or Beaufort before you go around if you have an un favorable weather forecast.

Hopefully the 47'' boat has less than a 65'' mast and can use the ICW. If so, duck into the ICW well south of Hatteras and finish the trip via ICW--whatever the weather forecast. Morehead City is a traditional point of departure for boats heading south that want to avoid Hatteras. The ICW is a nice trip in that area. I''ve done the ICW in that area in February--very cold, but interesting.
Otherwise, forget it.

When is the best time to round Cape Hatteras?

One writer said most people take their boats south in September and October, but those are prime hurricane months. Hurricane season starts in June. And if November thru spring sees a lot of lows building there--and we''ve certainly seen a lot so far this year--then when is it safest?

Just wondering...

June is usually the best month, but as you can see storms can happen year round.
M , I would be willing to bet the mast is over 65'' feet high. I guess the guy should just leave his boat in Florida since he cant use the ICW and sailing the boat off the coast and around Hatteras is just to dangerous?-thomas

A rabbits foot?

It isn''t the best time of year to round Hatteras for sure, but if the owner has the good sense and experience you proclaim, he should be making plans on where he can wait out weather if the forcast is particularly bad as you get up around that way.

If he is on a schedule and plans to ''just go for it'' regardless, I wouldn''t go along,''cause he has no good sense or enough experience with that part of the coast.

Get together all the warm clothing you think you will need, then double or triple it. It gets really cold ot there and the wind and moisture make it feel even more so.
