Depth Finder Settings

Some of my sailing friends adjust the setting on their DFs to read depth from the bottom of the keel. I prefer to have it set to read actual water depth. How do you have yours set, and why?

Re: Depth Finder Settings

Actual. I don't want to do math when in a pinch. Also, I anchor in places where there may only be 1 or 2 ft. below my keel at low tide. That renders the depth warning useless on most systems.

I don't follow Tim's post above )

I know that I draw 5.7' I set my Fishfinder to read actual (no Keel offset) so that I can compare easily with the depth soundings on the chart. I also have the shallow water alarm set for 8'...

Re: Depth Finder Settings

We've always used 'clearance'... ie depth below the keel.. just what we're used to, and seems like less math....

Re: Depth Finder Settings

I keep mine on actual depth. That way I can compare the chart soundings to the depth sounder and have an idea of how much water we have over datum without doing the math.

Re: Depth Finder Settings

I should have elaborated. The math was in reference to comparing with charts. I already have to do a tide math calculation(no way around that). I do not want to also do an offset calculation. More calculations equals more chance for errors.

Re: Depth Finder Settings

I have mine set to actual water depth. I am pretty good at telling what numbers are larger or smaller than 5' (my draft). As stated above I want to know what my depth is compared the the charts.

Re: Depth Finder Settings

We set ours on actual so it will resemble the charts, as others have said.

+1 for actual -- the fewer things my feeble mind has to wrestle with, the better off I seem to be...

I agree actual makes more sense.
