Who uses the Coast Pilot?

Possible stupid question:

Who here uses the coast pilot? I've managed 11 years or so in the PNW without it, and nobody I have boated with has been seen to use it and I rarely see it referenced (by anyone) but when I've checked it out at our local salty chandlary it seem to have lots of good info. It kind of looks like Charlie's Charts on steroids.

Anyone use it?

BTW, if you're too cheap to buy it, or you're worried your boat's waterline will sink an inch if you bring it aboard, it is free for download (yay tax dollars!)

Re: Who uses the Coast Pilot?

I like the US CG Coastal Pilot publications.
I haven't read much more then about my local area but I think the advice about crossing inlets is well worth taking along with you if your are on a long journey staying in unfamiliar harbors and inlets.
There is quite a lot of verbatum (words) but it does convey what you need to know.
It is free to download for the entire US coastal waters. I don't know why anyone would leave their mooring without it on a long journey.

Yes, good for offshore voyaging for the quantity and quality of data. Bought half a dozen or so before my departure many years ago......

very valuable information................. particularly back when we were operating on Loran A. I'm sure a lot of you remember those days.
Back then you are lucky if you had a recent Chart................captg

Re: Who uses the Coast Pilot?

I do have the Coast Pilot on board and do read it along with other things when sailing into a new area. There is a lot of free information available about the US so the Coast Pilot is one source. On the other hand, the NGA "Sailing Directions" that cover the rest of the world are a primary source for me. Again, they are free, for those who would like to check them out the link is:

I use them all them along with other Cruising guides. Download them for free from the coast guard's site and keep the electronic copy on your phone, tablet or laptop.
