Re: Motor in well

You might try taking GPS speed readings with the motor up and down. We had a Coronado 25 that had a well and couldn't notice any significant differences.

Re: Motor in well

the rule of thumb is between .5 and .75 kts - again, depends on the size of the propeller.

Well

I have mine in the well up to a knot and a half but i have an outboard mount also. I like it in the well but pull it up when wanting more speed. I have a 5hp longshaft.

Re: Motor in well

Nobody has mentioned whether their motor was in or out of gear. We used to take it out of gear and could not really see any difference. That was before GPS and we didn't have a knot meter. As the gears run in oil I doubt if it is harmful to let the prop spin when in neutral.

Re: Motor in well

Once had an old Piver 35' trimaran with a well in the cockpit set off to the side. It had a plug that fitted flush with the hull when I pulled out the outboard. When I did this the boat usually picked up a knot.
