Lifeline netting...

Any suggestions out there on the best (and most cost effective) way to attach lifeline netting to the lifelines? The little clips are out as they are far too expensive. I have considered the black zip ties, half-hitches, etc...

All suggestions welcomed!

You can generally lace the lifeline through the top of the netting to hang it. I am still searching for a good way to attach the bottom.

I'm in the same boat. My plan is to walk around the marina and see how others have done it.

Hi Jotun!

This is what I had hoped that I could do, but the swags and everything else would need to be removed, etc....

I will probably run half hitches around it for now, send another line (5mm nylon/poly) down around the base of the stanchions with clove hitches and tighten it as I go, then half hitch the netting to the new line that is run between the stanchions. My Albin Vega does not have any attachment points along the toe rail.

I have yet to have one of those moments where the light goes on and you say to yourself "Ah-haaaaa". This will just have to do until I figure out or see a better way to do this.

DO NOT USE ZIP TIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used that in my previous boat, and obviously cut the excedent after installing...

My legs and arms are still scratched from those hundreds of little knifes I had in my life lines!!!!!!

How do handle the gates?

Gates are for cargo loading, hop over it.

There's only one way sailors attached netting--that's with lashing. Th eonly thing I could come up with on the web is:
Tying a Parcel

showing what they call a "parcel knot" composed of two other knots. But if you watch the animation slowly--you can see how this knot can be tied, and then the free end of the line extended another few inches down a rail, etc., and another knot made, continuing on down a rail.

I can't remember what the proper name of the marine version is, but it also makes a damn handy way to secure the mainsail to the boom when a squall is about to hit. You basically knot, move down two feet, knot again, and there's very little fuss or passing through at each "knot".

Anybody with a better memory know the proper name for what I'm thinking of here?? All my knot-sense is in my hands, they don't ask my head to get involved in it.

I agree with Giu. DO NOT USE ZIP TIES!!! They become brittle in the sun and you wouldn't want a life line held up by brittle zip ties.

Tie it or lace it. Someday you might be glad you did it right.

OK, so how do you rig the gates for cargo loading?

Im planning on adding them to my boat once i redo the lifelines. For the bottom on my boat ive got a teak toerail that i just plan on screwing some small cup-hooks in to hook it on. As for the gates, i plan on redoing those also and just leaving them without netting.
