What's your biggest bonehead move sailing?

I left my slip under power and forgot to untie the other side of my tiller tamer. I was on a collision course with the bow of a large sailboat. At the last minute I was able to free it and throw it into reverse.

Many years ago while teaching sailing and running before the wind. I had an accidental jibe. Which surprised my students and myself. So I said with a straight face: "That how we don't do a jibe." To this day those students never figure out that I had made a mistake.

1. Forgot to attach the jib sheets to the storm sail in 45 knts of wind, not pretty.

2. Cranking up the jib halyard from the mast in strong winds with the main already raised, usual procedure, but not paying attention to the fact that we were on a starboard tact which brought the main to the same side as the winch, and yes, ripped a 3" slice in the main with the winch handle...arhhhh.

I've only done it twice (so far ). Once on purpose during keelboat class ('you want us to WHAT?!?'), and once 'cuz I was indecisive (see above). I learned not to be indecisive .
