Under power with sails flying

Just finished teaching Rules of the Road to my students and got to wondering: How many of you when under power and your sails are up; Hoist that cone with the apex down, to let others know that you are under power?? This is in accordance with the Rules!

Okay anyone admitting to doing so??

Don't even own any day markers, cone or otherwise. Have never seen any displayed up here, either, for that matter.

Sorry me, but if under power either just got the sails up or getting ready to drop them, so bypass the rules for short duration

One came with our boat, but have never used it. The first reason is - didn't think anyone would know what it meant anyway.

Of course, the second reason is, because we never use the motor when sailing . . .

Edit - For those who don't know what to look for, the "cone" we have is made of black plastic and consists of two interlocking halves - similar to our Davis alum. radar reflector. It's intended to be hoisted above deck by either a spreader flag, or other halyard. I know it's made in Europe, but don't know if it's in compliance with USCG regs.

I have never seen a boat display the black cone dayshape when motorsailing. I don't think 10% of the sailors out there know about this rule. I have never seen the USCG stop people for failing to display the correct day shape. But you must remember it is the rule. When it becomes important is in the event of an accident! If you were not showing the shape and had an accident, the lawyers would be all over it making you look responsible for the accident. I plan to buy a cone and try to remember to use it!

One came with our boat. I had to look it up to find out what it represented. I spend a lot of time on the water in the Puget Sound. I think I saw one pleasure boater flying an anchor ball one time. Other than that, I see the occasional fishing boat with their double cones permanently affixed to their mast whether fishing or not.

When commercial fishing (dragging) I always hung a basket from the rigging. (What I had always been told to do as a day marker for active fishing.)

No-one ever payed any attention, though.

Not to hijack this thread, but there are a lot of things recreational boaters do that earns them the ire of commercial fisherman. And yes, I know that commercial fishermen can be a royal PIA, often enough on purpose; but some of the stupidity I've seen ...................

I don't own any day shapes. I don't display the cone when motoring with sails up. I also don't display the ball when anchored during the day.

I suppose that I should at least own the day shapes, but I have never seen them used, and I don't think anyone cares either.
