And with hindsight being the pefect science that it is, I would have hoisted a reefed main to get more boat speed, left the headsail up and put a light drogue out to stabilise the yawing.

What do you mean by a "light drogue"? Like a warp run from the aft bollards made of 300 feet of one-inch
line? Or like maybe 40 feet of a Jordan Series drogue?
