"to make fast"

A question on terminiology. to make fast refers to cleating off a line. It does not refer to the speed of cleating off a line.
Am i correct?

To make fast refers to any securing by line or chain to almost any object and does not have any reference to the speed with which it is done. Thus a line can be made fast to a cleat, bollard, or piling. And a boat or ship is made fast to the ground when she is at anchor or moored. "Make her fast" means to secure whatever line, chain, or wire rope you're working with.

It can also refer to the condition of a wooden hull. a "fast" hull is one which does not leak. It has been "fastened", or "made fast". The planking has been secured nicely to the framing with the "fastenings" and is not coming loose.

If you want something made fast quickly, then add the order "and look sharp about it". If you want it done carefully, order that it be done handsomely.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know. So what is it Jason? You can tell us, your secret will be safe here, we won't tell anyone.

Where I come from, to "make fast", or "make her fast" means the same, but the process in itself changes:

1) Before the process of construction, you chose a set of boat hull lines and design and materials that make her fast...
2) During the process of construction, you try to save weight and increase ridgidity, by chosing light strong materials, and better apply them correctly, to make her fast...if you build fast, you make fast...
3) After construction, you shave some more weight, normally where it is not needed, to make her fast
4) when you sail, you need to know what to trim, to make her fast....

Normally in my Country, tying a line makes her slow, not fast.....I wonder if that is why CD and others consider sailing when they are "made fast" to a mooring...

But who are we??? just an inferior race that smell herring and don't know crap about sailing....

ehehehehehehehehehehehe
