You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

USCG and bells

Had a somewhat animated discussion with the USCG fellows in Rockland Maine last August who thought that my bell (buried behind/under a bunch of gear below deck) should have been more accessable. In short, his view - beyond that of "that's the rule, Sir" - was that we must have bells in case our electric dies or freon runs out and we need a signalling device. I suggested my conch shell and the already discussed pots and spoons, but he wasn't impressed.

Now THAT was funny Giu! You're on a roll today. We do tend to have a little something called fog here sometimes. Look here.

Bottom line: if you're over 12 meters LOA you're required to have a bell. If you do not you cannot comply with the Colregs, either international or inland.

A bell was also used to give engine orders:

one bell = Ahead slow
two bell = Stop
three bell = back slow
Four bells = Full speed in the direction of the last engine order.

This was in the days when you did not have engine controls next to the helm. Those were the good old days

This is also along with the Fog signals given by the bell. (5 seconds of ding-a-linging)
