Many sailing schools, have a weekend class on how to use and understand radar.

Look at Starpath School of Navigation. They have books, CD simulation, and online courses. PM me if you have trouble finding them.

That's a good book. I would also check out the downloadable radar simulator from Starpath.

Also check on your radar if you can tie in a AIS to it or to your ECDIS.
There are many schools for radar. But if you want it on your license you will need to go to a USCG certified school. Otherwise learning about radar with what ever means available is good.
From my point of view: Radar is an excellent tool for the Mariner. But that is all it is a tool. It really don't replace the Mark I eyeball of a good lookout, but it does enhances your safety circle.
The AIS was developed for security, but is rapidly developing into an outstanding safety tool when it is tied in with a radar or ECDIS.

I concur with Boasun. I am an advocate of a "stand-alone" radar system, because I think it's a qualitatively different tool than a chart plotter, and that the odds of confusion when the two are combined rise. But tying AIS data into radar makes sense, and I think that in some senses, AIS will prove to be one of the bigger technological aids to recreational sailing in the last 20 years, as it gives you information you cannot get by any other means.

If you keep an eye on your radar during the day you'll have a better idea what you're looking at in bad weather. Make arrival during the day picking out the buoys and landmarks on the chart when they're visible will be a big help if you ever have to do it in fog or at night
