I was a navigator. My beer mug and name tag said "Navigating Officer". The Captain called me "Pilot". When I was Captain I called my navigator "Pilot".

nolatom will become famous soon enough
On merchant ships, typically the Second Mate is the navigation officer. The polite form of address in the U.S. is "Mister mate", or I guess "Ms. mate", since there are more female ship officers these days.

On sailboats, it's "Hey you, got that fix so I can tack"?

Jason. The US Navy has a Rate or did have when I was in called Quartermaster that navigated ex. plotted course given to him by the Capt. on paper charts. Now with GPS and such they might have combined that rate with other on the Bridge, radarman, signalman Etc.
