As a 20-year Naval Aviation vet, I can say checklists are mandatory! Of course you should know Emergency Procedures cold, and be well practiced in them, but even in aviation emergencies, your procedures come from knowing the checklist! Your checklists should cover every conceivable mishap and should be readily available to all hands. On a boat with a crew, one crew member should be designated to handle the emergency checklist and read the steps in order, checking them off as completed.
It can eliminate a great deal of confusion and save you and your craft.
