What are smokes? are you talking about the smoke flares? yes definetly on my boat, those are along! Beer, sometimes, usually a bottle of vinny is onboard too.

Along with the greek princess too, usually.............if it is just the two of us, races, about 1/3 of the time, then it is my kids.

All of the required gear must be aboard all vessels at all times...regardless if you intend to sail at night or not. Navigation lights are a required item to be in working order...even if you nevetr intnd to sail at night.
Rain gear is Ok but in a waves breaking on the bow and wind driven salt water being blown back into the cockpit situation the best thing to have on hand is a skin diving mask or gogles to keep the salt water out of your eyes. You eyes can get very irritated after several hours of salt water in the face that will run down inside your expensive foul weather gear soaking you down to your underwear. Thus one set of spare dry clothing is nice to have also and also can of OFF inspect repellant and a citronella candle. It's bad enough to get stuck out overnight unexpectedly...without feeding the bugs your blood also.

Goggles are a decent thing to have ... it also does double duty allowing one to dive the boat in the event lines get wrapped around a prop etc - and you have no choice but to dive... I don't have any onboard but think I will get a pair or two now....

Jody, the water around here is awful damned cold to be diving in without at least a wetsuit. I'd hate to hear of a sailing buddy of mine drowning from hypothermia.

I have a dive bag in my boat left over from my diving days. It contains a full wet suit, wet belt, fins, mask and snorkle, knife, and gloves. I've never needed it so far, but I know it's there if I do...reminds me...I need to take the wet suit out and inspect it.

All those for a day out... Because if something is gonna happen it's gonna happen when you are not ready it... (murphy's law)
