Day sailing essentials

Day sailing can be a lot of fun when you are properly prepared, but can be miserable when you are not. It is easy to find yourself in a situation where you realized how unprepared you really are, but it would interesting to learn what you think is a "must have" when day sailing.

Besides the required safety equipment?

Foul weather gear--otherwise it will rain

Anchor and rode--otherwise you'll need it

Bailer or pump--ditto above

Decent weather and no fog?

A breeze?

I don't know, the question's pretty general

Personally, I bring a bag full of "junk" with simple tools, first-aid stuff, portable vhf, yada yada..

Prepare for night sailing too

Life on the water is unpredictable, so when preparing for day sailing it might be a good idea to prepare for night sailing too! Appropriate nav lights, flashlights and a knowledge of the Col Regs should be present on any trip.

Well lets not stop at day sailing. I would like to see anyone’s or everyone’s packing checklist for day-sailing, weekend sailing, a week long cruse and beyond. I like to get the details right and it would be helpful to see what I have missed.

For day-sailing my list includes: ball cap (hat), deck shoes or sandals, swimsuit, Float Plan, Sailing Notes, Crew Sailing Safety Brief notes, Sunglasses and Backup sunglasses, first aid kit, small bag of emergency items, life-jackets as required, water proof (otter) boxes, portable GPS, Kleenex packs, Lunch/Snack Items, snorkel gear and fins (depending on location), swimming towel, bank cards, cell phone, cell phone case, duct tape, a few tools and lots of ice water.

Except for the notes, my list is quite similar to fathergoose's.
