Basically, an aluminum mast has almost no radar profile. Radar needs flat surfaces, corners and edges to reflect off of, and most masts have little in the way of large flat surfaces, hard corners or edges.

If the mast has no reflection then where is his reflector, or reflectors? I will occassionally call a freighter to see if I am clear on his screen. The thunderstorms that roll through southern Florida can be as bad as fog.

Works for motorcycles too, with a change from "sail" to "rode", and for cars with a change to "drove".

Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.
This rule has as consequence that all solo sailing for long trips is against the COLREGS as there is no look-out when the skipper is sleeping. Apparently the risk is tolerated, but it remains that most authorities insist on a proper look-out, and check it was effectively carried out after an incident. In spite of this the look-out duties are more and more neglected on many ships.
So who was not keeping lookout is on the wrong end

Motoring under autopilot in the fog with the bridge left unattended is a bigger problem than not just keeping a good lookout imho.
